This legendary award-winning joint has been serving up impeccable Gujju thalis for decades now. Gordhan Thal and Gopi in Amdavad serve equally good thalis at half the price. This Gujarati Thali at Shree Thaker Bhojanalay is an authentic Gujarati Thali. The curries were rather simple but complimented the dal and kadhi perfectly. Dubbed to be the best Gujarati thali in Mumbai, I’ve been longing to visit it since I first saw it on my Twitter timelines.

The restaurant has welcomed distinguished visitors over the years, including American chef Alice Waters, who reportedly tasted jowar bhakri (a millet flatbread) here for the first time. Walking through the cramped alley and up a flight of narrow stairs to reach this first-floor eatery might not immediately suggest a premier dining destination.
“Actor Farooq Shaikh used to love our food and was a regular,” says Gautam. From Nigella Lawson to Chef Alain Passard and Ness Wadia to Asha Bhonsle, Shree Thaker Bhojanalaya has played host to celebrities from various fields. “We cook food in small batches and it is made again if need be, rather than have vegetables get discoloured and taste flavourless, being cooked and kept since the morning,” he explains. Wheat is made from grains purchased by them and the vegetables too are brought fresh each day.
