Lodhi Garden Delhi Visiting Timings & How to Reach

In fact, the garden is also home to the tombs of several rulers from the Lodhi dynasty that are architectural marvels too. Many tombs and monuments are located inside the Lodhi Garden, Delhi. Delhi has many gardens and parks which can be visited to enjoy the weather. The gardens regularly host educational programs for school groups, university students, and the general public, focusing on topics ranging from history and architecture to botany and environmental science. The historical monuments within the gardens require Lodhi Garden ongoing conservation attention to address weathering, pollution damage, and structural issues.

  • The central location makes it easy to combine visits with other nearby attractions such as India Gate or Khan Market.
  • The gardens are a great place to relax, enjoy nature, and explore the history behind the ancient tombs and lush landscapes.
  • This mosque and ancient pavilion are beautifully preserved with amazing islamic carvings and a very photogenic avenue of columns!
  • The dome of poet Rahim’s tomb on Mathura Road was once fully marble.
  • Various areas throughout the gardens offer quiet spots suitable for individual practice or group sessions, with the natural beauty and historical monuments creating inspiring backdrops.

Lodhi Garden is also a beautiful, landscaped green space, home to a variety of trees, plants, and birds. The oldest tomb in the garden, this tomb has a unique octagonal design. This is a walled tomb, at the center of the garden. This tomb is located in the center of the park. Named after the glazed tiles that once decorated its exterior, this tomb is known for its blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. Lodhi Garden has several architectural sites from the 15th and 16th centuries, back when the Lodhi dynasty ruled parts of northern India.

Just make sure you don't leave any rubbish as the park was pristine when we visited! The gardens are also nearby to Khan Market (see later on) which has plenty of upmarket food options. Google states you can walk from one end of the park to the other in 20 minutes but this is nowhere near enough time to explore the park properly. At the southern end of the park is the oldest tomb, the Tomb of Muhammed Shah. Rising up out of the park’s central green lawns this massive tomb/mosque is impossible to miss. This incredibly octagonal tomb is (according to the internet at least) the earliest example of a garden tomb in India.

The tomb is octagonal in shape, and is a good example of the inclusion of features from Hindu architecture into Indo-Islamic buildings. To the north of the garden are the remains of a stream which may once have run as far as the Yamuna River, and by its side is the tomb of Sikandar Lodi. The gardens are situated between Khan Market and Safdarjung's Tomb on Lodi Road and are a popular spot for morning walks for Delhiites. So visit today to find out how Lodhi Garden becomes one of Delhi’s gems.

The dome of poet Rahim’s tomb on Mathura Road was once fully marble. (Sometimes citizens get confused between the two; he ends up waiting for her at the Coffee House, she for him at the Coffee Home). The city itself, it seems, produces pairs in countless forms. The two bougainvillea trees are currently in bloom, synchronising in perfect jugalbandi with each other, twinning brightly, here at Lodhi Garden. Can I bring a picnic to Lodhi Garden?

Indian Tourism

At the middle of the garden is the Bara Gumbad and Sheesh Gumbad both built in 1494 during the reign of Sikander Lodi. If you are planning to visit Delhi anytime soon, do not miss out on this amazing spot. There are loads monuments and places to visit in Delhi. There are boards indicating the tombs and other structures. Lodhi Garden has an interesting history. So visiting here during holidays (preferably evening time) would be a good idea for families.
